New Project

Here is Denis' latest project. (Sorry, GMJ, I neglected to get any action shots this time) It is the first of two planned raised beds for us to start a veggie garden in. He constructed them out of cedar wood. They will be surrounded by small "pea" gravel paths. There will be wire mesh for gopher deterrence and ground cloth for weed hindrance. My job is to study what we can still plant this late in the spring. Any ideas? Do you all have gardens? What do you like to grow? I am so totally inexperienced in the gardening dept., but I'm excited about getting to eat the fruit (and veg) of our (his) labors. My only plan so far: only plant one tomato plant...

Here in the northeast, we don't get our veggie gardens in until mid to late May when the danger of frost is over. I buy plants if we want to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers or squash. I assume you have a much longer growing season than we do. How about two tomato plants or a cherry tomato plant.

I am hoping to get James to build me some raised beds this year but I'm not holding my breath! Last year they were more like berms.

I think Craig is going to build a raised bed this weekend next to our garage (the only sunny place in our yard). We are hoping to have vegetables but one year Hugo ate all of the vegetables out of the garden so we had none. I don't know how we will keep him away; he's bigger than a gopher. I like herbs like Basil, Cilantro and Parsley but I am not good at gardening so I can't really suggest anything.

Hannah and I planted a "salad garden" today, spinach, radishes, snow peas. The lettuce will have to wait until the weather is more stable.

We planted the herbs this week, basil, chlantro, parsley, thyme, oregano, chives, etc, and Carl's one tomato plant. You are warmer in southern OR. so how about green beans, need a string thing for them to grow on as bush ones take up to much space. And everything Martha said would also work.

Great ideas. I definitely want to have an herb garden. Most herbs are perennials it seems, which is great! I'd like to have them closer to the kitchen though.... Still thinking on that one.

Nixie, I think they really blew it on that task where they had to put the signs up in the right order. They started out with an advantage in knowing what country to start with. But they just lost patience and didn't check the SPELLING, which Rob even mentioned!! It was a bit out of character. Then i think they just lost heart because they were feeling behind.

I think it was a flight that started the leg off badly for them.

well, my cat's like herbs I found out last year. LOL just an FYI.

Not that I know ANYTHING about plants, but I think you could probably still plant whatever you want at this point. But I've heard from several people that it's still to early for lettuce.

BTW, my blog isn't private I must have just posted all weird, I have a couple accounts set up with gmail. It think that's were it all went wrong, anyhoo you should be able to link over to my blog now.
