Myers Briggs

Have you ever taken a Myers Briggs personality test? That is the one which categorizes you with four letters which stand for a personality trait. They are:

Extrovert vs. Introvert
Sensing vs. iNtuitive
Thinking vs. Feeling
Judging vs. Perceiving

I am an ESTP. I never thought that the description that the MB gives really fit me all that well. I wasn't sure what use all this might be until the dean of women at my seminary gave us an little overview. She explained what each of these contrasting personality traits means.

E vs. T has to do with how you get energized. When you are mentally fatigued, do you prefer to be alone or with people? Does going to a party wear you out or make you feel refreshed?
S vs. N has to do with how you gather information. Do you like to gather a lot of facts and value the sources or do you get an over all sense of something?
T vs. F has to do with decision making. Do you think things through carefully or tend to make decsions with your gut feeling?
J vs. P has to do with planning. Js plan things out and like a schedule, Ps prefer to be spontaneous.

So what do you think you are? Do you think knowing this is valuable? How could it be used in your daily life?

Priscilla, isn't that funny? You and I seem to be polar opposites!

I will answer my own questions about how this can be useful. I have had friends and roommates who were different than me in these areas and it led to common misunderstandings or communication problems.

For instance, a roommate was an intuitive. She would come home from work with statements about news events of political happenings. I would always ask, "how do you know? where did you hear that? what was the source?" which of course was very irritating to her. One of the key things the dean of women mentioned was that it's not that 'Ns' don't have reliable info, it's just that they necessarily remember the source because that is not as important to them. Hmmmm...

Also, we tend as a society to really value extroverts and then to think that introverts don't like people. She said it's not that 'Is' don't like people, it just that they need down time to recharge.

So I think it is helpful to know about how you operate and how your loved ones do so that you can make allowances for differences and communicate better.

I would say I'm a (is that T for Introvert?) I'm not so sure I'm an introvert, but I'm not an extrovert either. How about an inny outy?
My husband says as far as gathering info I get an overall sense 1st and then gather the facts, which I would say is true.
As far as decision making goes, I tend to think things through quite carefully.
And I like to be spontaneous, not always have to have everything all planned out. Once plans have been made though, to have them change is something that I have always hated. I guess I'm more resistant to change, but I think this has gotten somewhat better over the years.
Wow! How's that for rambling?

It took me a long time to accept that I am an introvert. Of course we introverts like people! What your friend said was right on! We need down time to recharge.

When I was a little girl, my mother was really into these personality things. She would always say to me, "You are such an introvert." I really grew to hate that term and I thought it was a big negative about me. This of course was a big lie from Satan! Thankfully the Lord has corrected this thinking and I have learned to appreciate more who He meant me to be.

Rachel...you are definitely extroverted!

Looking at this might help.

Better yet. Try this one

Apparently my personality has changed a bit. I took two tests on the web and came out ENTP - so I've switched from sensing to intuitive!

This makes me some sort of genius according to the description - which I doubt... :o) I've never felt like the paragraph where they describe you fit me well anyway.

Ha! I hope this isn't giving you an identity crisis!

For the most part the description I read (on the sight posted in my blog post back in February)...was really right on.

It could be that you are borderline between the two anyway. I am definitely ISFJ...but I found that I had some ISFP traits. Whatever!
