Poplar Tree
Isn't that a beautiful tree? So calm and serene, with the fluttering leaves and the filtered light... This is our neighbor's large poplar tree which extends its branches over our back yard. It is a large, mature tree and it had several offspring - 7 small poplar saplings - that were on our property when we moved here. We had them taken out so that we wouldn't wind up in a poplar forest.
Well, here is the result of having a big poplar tree in our neighbor's yard. That tree drops leaves and twigs into our backyard year round! It is the bane of Denis' existence. This photo was taken one day after he had raked the yard. The fall is of course, the worst part of the year for the leaves. Well, at least we don't have any lack of composting material. :o)

It's like a sea of leaves.. Look s quite pretty actually but I am sure it is a bit annoying esp after Denis had just racked.
The Pro's and Con's of having a beautiful tree next door ;)
In our town a great big truck with a huge vacuum hooked to it comes around to suck the leaves that people have piled in their front yards. They have been to our street twice this fall. I don't know what we would do if they didn't come because we have lots of trees and leaves.
I guess leaves in the fall just don't bother me. We do rake ours but it's really a losing battle because there are so many beautiful mature trees on our property. Mostly I feel bad when they blow into the neighbor's yard. He keeps his lawn immaculate.
Martha- It's not good for your lawn to just leave them there. Our town makes mulch of them and then we go pick up this free, rich, black leaf mulch in the spring and put it on our gardens.
oh rachel i like that idea.... that is very small townish... do you live in a small town? and I bet your garden grows great.....
sorry denis for your plite.
No...her town is not small. It is a pretty good sized suburb of Rochester, NY.
I don't mind the leaves. I see you still have more leaves connected to the trees yet. Most of the trees are naked here now.
Well, Rachie Baby, if it was your job to rake this lawn, you might think twice too. Besides, have you looked around my yard lately? It's full of all kinds of things that are not good for a lawn, firewood, sawdust, a Bobcat tractor, miscellaneous pieces of lumber... Leaves are rather harmless compared to most of that stuff.
Not to mention that "pond".
Rachel, I am quite jealous of your city's composting program. I can't believe that it is free! Our city does come around the pick up yard debris and probably makes something out of it, but I have no idea what. In the fall, you can bag up your leaves and put them at the curb as well.
By the way, I love my yard, I love the leaves, I even love the wood debris, and I'm not complaining. We don't hae anyone coming around to collect our leaves either. We can leave them in the yard, drag them down to the garden or burn them.
yah you can put them out on the curb here too, but they charge you for it if it is outside of the green garbage can they give you.
5 bucks... so my neighbors just do it in shifts.
sad.
That's a lot of leaves!!
